On September 17th, the  recently re-activated BVOPN held the 2nd  meeting for 2014. Our featured member and speaker,  Ms. Alice Kirk shared her work with the Community Transformation Grant (CTG) in Starr County.  Alice has been with Extension since 1996, when she began as a county program assistant implementing two health education programs aimed at improving the health practices of predominately Hispanic, low-literacy, limited resource families. Alice serves as a conduit between researched best practices and Extension County based educational programs. She provides oversight to the Statewide Walk Across Texas program and Balancing Food & Play programs.  She has also supported various grant initiatives including the ARRA: Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW), Community Transformation Grant (CTG) in Starr Co. and Texas Grow Eat Go (TGEG) projects.  Alice conducts workshops, delivers trainings and presentations at local, state and national levels on Extension health and wellness programs and physical activity.  She also serves on various local, state and national committees; including Texas Action for Healthy Kids, HEB Health Advisory Task Force, National Rural Health Association and even her son’s local School PTA.  Alice has a Bachelor’s degree in Community Health and a Masters of Public Health, with a concentration in Social and Behavioral Health, both from Texas A&M University.
