Description

The Youth Development Initiative (http://www.ydi.tamu.edu/) is working with the Brazos Valley Community Action Agency, Inc. and Brazos Valley Obesity Prevention Network on a new project called UP BEAT (Umbrella Partnership- BE Active in our Town). UP BEAT is a coalition of community groups working to prevent obesity and encourage physical activity in the Brazos Valley.

Youth participants have leadership skills and are interested in serving their community. Youth participating in UPBEAT are training on leadership, public speaking, technology (Global Information System-GIS, photography, video recording/editing and Microsoft Software) and youth mapping of their community.  Youth will complete community assessments and present their recommendations for improving accessibility to and opportunities for physical activity to Bryan and College Station City Councils.  Youth participating in the program will receive incentives such as shirts, gift cards, food, etc).

This project is a great way for youth to learn, have fun and improve their community.
